Our team of Therapeutic Recreation Therapists along with volunteers provides a well balanced activity program for our residents. Residents interests and level of functioning are taken into consideration when scheduling various recreation activities. Regular activities:
Fairview residents enjoyed visiting with 22 Coast Guard Cadets for three hours on Sunday, April 13, 2008. Cadets and residents spent time playing games and conversing and they enjoyed a wonderful snack. Tiffiny Stanley and Tim Stanley volunteered their time as well.
A special tree planting took place on April 23, 2008 in honor of Earth Day. A weeping cherry tree was planted in the recreation courtyard for all of the residents to enjoy. Pictured helping plant the tree is resident Jerry Kozikowski with Joe Lopes, Director of Environmental Services.
Fairview now has a new interactive game made by Nintendo called a Wii. It is being used by our recreation and therapy departments. You can bowl, play tennis, baseball, and golf. The residents recently got their first chance to play and the game was a big hit. It not only helps with coordination and other motor skills; it is also uplifting mentally. We are grateful to George Hammel for donating the funds to purchase this game. Pictured using the game for the first time is Gen Bitters, a resident at Fairview.
Fairview held its annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 20, 2008. Children from the child development center came to the new Stephen Terry Lodge #59 courtyard to find eggs that were left by none other than Peter Rabbit. Several residents watched the children gather the eggs from the comfort of the new resident wing lounge. Pictured is Peter with some of the children. Residents can shop for personal items, snacks and gifts at affordable prices when they visit the sunshine cart each week. The Fairview handbell choir meets weekly. There are opportunities for indoor and outdoor gardening. Picnics and other outdoor activities are provided on the patio during warmer months. Special events
The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Dancers made their third visit to Fairview on February 19, 2008 to entertain our residents and children from our child development center. This visit was special as the children who performed put a smile on our residents’ faces; they also made a gift bag for each and every resident to show their love and respect for our elder population. Pictured are several of the dancers entertaining our residents and a young dancer presenting a gift bag to Fairview residents Genevieve and John Bitters.
Fairview's annual Mother's Day Tea was held in the Auditorium on Sunday, May 11, 2008. Several members of the IOOF Niantic Lodge # 17 volunteered their time to help with this special annual Tea.
It's pizza making time in the Recreation Room... Sailors from the U.S. Sub Base and other volunteers assist with birthday parties, the Mother's Day Tea and annual holiday dinners. Each month residents visit a local restaurant for dinner, at no cost to them. Donations to the resident fund make this possible. Residents with varying degrees of mental abilities enjoy activities especially adapted for them. At least two spiritual activities or religious services are provided each week and a chapel is available for private or small group meditation. The caring staff and variety of activities offer comfort and stimulation to our residents.
